Music Venues in York

Local music venues for your first gig or simply enjoying live music & performances.

Here at Piano Lessons York we love going to see live music, so we thought that we’d share a few of our favourite venues with you to give you an idea where is good to go in York.

But what we love even more is when one of our own pupils takes to the stage, so we hope that this will give you a little bit of inspiration.

The Duchess York

The Duchess York is located at Stonebow House, York YO1 7NP - right in the middle of town! With a jam-packed schedule of live music, this more than reasonably sized venue is the place to be if you want a great atmosphere and quality live bands. The drinks are well priced and the staff are always friendly, what more could you want? All of our piano students can catch us down there pretty regularly, checking up on the latest and greatest local talent. Feel free to come and say hi.

The Basement York

The Basement York is one of the city's smallest venues, holding just a cosy 100 people. But what The Basement lacks in size it makes up in atmosphere. Very rarely will you get watch acts from within touching distance, so The Basement gives you an arts experience that is hard to find elsewhere. Holding poetry, music, drama and DJ events, there’s loads to see here, as well as a 16+ policy, so the vibe is often slightly more mature than teeny-bopper filled venues. If this sounds like the venue for you, head down to 13-17 Coney Street, York, YO1 9QL.

Fibbers

Fibbers is not quite what most people have in mind when they think of York. About as futuristic as you could get for such a historic and quaint county town, it’s neon tubes and strobe lighting contrast nicely with the archaic stonework situated just outside its front doors. Understandably, Fibbers has been one of York’s most popular clubs since it opened in 1992 and it definitely has the rich history of good acts gracing its stage to back up this claim. The Cribs, Laura Marling, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro, Jake Bugg, Coldplay and the synth-toting Crystal Castles have all played here, as well as a host of other established and up-and-coming bands. Fibbers is situated right in the centre of York, so there really is no excuse not to check it out at 10 Stonebow House, York YO1 7NP.

York Barbican

York Barbican draws the biggest names in comedy, theatre and musicals, making it the perfect place for relaxed or hilarious evening. Ed Byrne, Milton Jones and Ardon O’Hanlon are all booked in for upcoming comedy evenings, whilst comedy ‘51 Shades of Maggie’ and musical ‘That’ll Be The Day’ fill theatrical slots. With a 1500 seated capacity and 1900 standing capacity, it is easily the biggest venue in the area ensuring that it will continue to host great acts and musicians. Not limiting itself to music, comedy and theatre, it also holds regular conferences, as well as the UK snooker championship. To see your yourself, head on to Kent Street, York, YO10 4AH.
